Just been watching the vote in UK parliament over same sex marriage, feeling grieved, hopeful and stirred!
Grieved in that I am really not sure that our law makers know what they are doing. ”Equality” is the new “Truth”, we have replaced an sense of clear definition of truth with a secular mantra of equality. Our law makers have taken it upon themselves under the guise of being “fair”, to redefine the historic biblical definition of marriage with something that fits with political correctness. Gay people have all the rights of anyone else, but yet there is this need to change the very definition of marriage. Do we really understand the social and spiritual effects of this rushed legislation? Is it really aimed at equality or distracting us from the issues of the economy? This is not about equality.
Hopeful in that this is not over yet. There is still a significant group of our law makers who are opposed to this change in the law and it still needs to go to the committee stage and the House of Lords. Come on Bishops, now you need to speak up, set the spiritual tone for the nation. I wonder what the Queen thinks?
Stirred in that it should send a jolt to the spiritual soul of the nation. Come on bride of Christ (the church), get stirred. The joining of a man and a woman is a prophetic declaration of the union of Christ and his bride. Get stirred in prayer. Get stirred in love. Get stirred in action. We need more Christians in Parliament, more Christians in places of influence in the nation.
Lets not get angry with people or inflame the debate, but lets change the tone with expressions of love, compassion and understanding, winning people to our argument not because we use the rhetoric of judgement but the language of grace. This doesn’t have to be an anti-gay issue. We can disagree with all sorts of choices people make without it becoming a judgement on them, however the stakes are high.. so its time to speak out!
